Preventive Cardiology

What is the Preventive Cardiology Clinic?

Some children and adolescents may be at risk for early coronary artery disease, or atherosclerosis. Some children are also at risk for development of diabetes. We provide screening, diet and exercise counseling, and medical treatment and follow-up for this group of patients. This clinic is made possible by funding from the Heart Institue of the Cascades, and is staffed by a physician, a dietician, and a behavioral health specialist.

Who should be seen in the Preventive Cardiology Clinic?

Children under the age of 18 and are at higher risk for early heart disease can be seen in the Preventive Cardiology Clinic. This includes children who:

  • Are overweight or obese

  • Have high blood pressure

  • Have an abnormal cholesterol level

  • Have a family history of abnormal cholesterol

  • Have a family history of heart attacks at an early age (before age 55 in males and age 65 in females)

  • Have diabetes, prediabetes, or metabolic syndrome

  • Have chronic kidney disease

  • Have chronic inflammatory disease, such as lupus

  • Have a history of Kawasaki disease
